Marrakech to sahara escape

Trip Overview

Three days. Two nights. One trip that covers more ground than most people see in a week.

This is the classic Morocco desert route for a weekend escape for students the one that starts in the red city of Marrakech, winds through ancient kasbahs, rose valleys and dramatic mountain canyons, and ends with you watching the sun sink behind the Sahara dunes from the back of a camel. Or a 4×4 if you prefer.

It’s fast, it’s full, and it’s the kind of trip that makes you realise you’ve been missing out on something your whole life. Most groups arrive in Marrakech the night before or early morning, by the time the trip ends, they’re already planning their next one.

Itinerary

Early morning departure from Marrakech. The road south takes you through dramatic mountain passes, ancient kasbahs and one of Morocco’s most iconic UNESCO sites before you reach your accommodation in the Dades Valley for the night.

Along the way you stop at the Monkey Fingers rock formations in the Dades Gorges for a 30-minute walk through one of the most photographed canyon landscapes in Morocco. Dinner and overnight in Dades Valley.

This is the day everything changes.

Morning starts with a walk through Todgha Gorge, a stunning natural canyon with walls rising hundreds of metres on either side. Thirty minutes walking through it and you understand why people travel across the world just for this stop.

From there the road opens up toward the Sahara. You arrive at the dunes in the late afternoon perfectly timed for sunset. Choose your ride into the camp: camel or 4×4. Either way you arrive as the sun drops and the dunes turn gold.

Sunset over the Sahara. Dinner at camp. Music around the fire. Your group, the desert, and a sky full of stars.

Both our basic and luxury desert camps are fully air-conditioned. Sandboarding available in the evening or at sunrise.

Wake up before sunrise and walk up the dunes. Watch the Sahara go from black to gold in twenty minutes. It is the quietest and most beautiful moment of the whole trip.

After breakfast your group heads back to Marrakech. Music on, windows up, your group reliving everything from the last two days. You arrive back in Marrakech in the evening.

Any size group works. If there are more than 20 of you, just book in advance, since all our trips run private.

Desert days get hot, but nights in the camp get surprisingly cold, so bring layers. A scarf or light headwrap helps with wind and sand, plus sunscreen and comfortable shoes for walking on sand and rock.

This 3-day, 2-night trip starts at €160 per person for our budget plan, comfy, clean stays with everything you need. Reach out with your group size and dates for an exact quote.

Fall and spring are the best times to visit, warm days and comfortable nights. Summer runs hot, but our accommodations and vehicles are air conditioned, so you’re never stuck sweating it out. Winter nights get cold, so pack warm layers, but that’s part of the charm, there’s nothing like wrapping up by the campfire under a clear desert sky.

We actually own our own transportation company, so it’s not some random driver you’ve never met. Small groups ride in a Toyota Prado, bigger groups get a Mercedes Vito van or Sprinter minibus, and for groups over 20 we bring in a full-size bus. Everything is clean, comfortable, and driven by drivers we know and trust.

Yes, we can include or exclude activities to suit what you and  your group like.

It’s a completely different experience from the city or the coast, vast dunes, Berber camps, nights under the stars. If you have the time, pairing it with Marrakech or the coast is the best way to see more than one side of the country.

Yes, this trip can be extended to more days or shortened to fit your schedule. It also pairs well with Marrakech or our coast trips if you or your group wants to add more of Morocco.
