This is the trip that covers it all. You start in the energy of Marrakech, cross dramatic landscapes into the Sahara, spend a night under the stars at the desert camp, pass through one of Morocco’s most iconic ancient sites on the way back, and end with two days on the Atlantic coast in Essaouira one of the most beautiful towns in North Africa.

Most groups who do this trip say the same thing at the end: they had no idea Morocco was this varied. Six days and you will see more than most people see in two weeks.

Itinerary

You arrive in Marrakech and your guide is waiting. After settling in, your group heads out for a guided tour of the medina, the souks, Jemaa el-Fna square, and the energy of a city that runs on its own rules. The evening ends with a group dinner before the journey south begins tomorrow.

Early morning departure heading south. The road takes you through dramatic mountain passes, ancient kasbahs and landscapes that change every hour.

No surprise stops, no hidden fees. Your driver and guide take you to the best local restaurants at prices that work for your budget. If you want to buy something along the way, your guide is right there to help you get a fair deal.

A stop at the Monkey Fingers rock formations in the Dades Gorges for a 30-minute walk through one of the most photographed canyon landscapes in Morocco. Dinner and overnight in Dades Valley.

The day everything changes.

Morning starts with a walk through Todgha Gorge, a spectacular natural canyon with walls rising hundreds of metres on both sides. Thirty minutes walking through it before the road opens up completely toward the Sahara.

You arrive at the dunes in the late afternoon perfectly timed for sunset. Choose your ride into the camp: camel or 4×4. Either way you arrive as the sun drops and the dunes turn gold.

At the camp, the evening is yours. Sunset over the dunes, a camel ride into the Sahara, dinner inside the tent and a music night around the bonfire. No itinerary can fully prepare you for that night. You just have to be there.

Both our basic and luxury desert camps are fully air-conditioned. Sandboarding available in the evening or at sunrise.

Wake up before sunrise. Walk up the dunes. Watch the Sahara go from black to gold in twenty minutes.

After breakfast the road takes you back west with a stop at Aït Benhaddou, the ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site that has appeared in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and dozens of major productions. A walk through its narrow streets and up to the top for views over the valley before continuing to Marrakech.

Arrive Marrakech in the evening. Overnight in the city.

This is where the trip completely changes pace.

The drive from Marrakech to Essaouira takes you through argan tree forests and open coastal plains before the ocean appears on the horizon. You arrive in Essaouira  a walled Atlantic port town with white and blue streets, fresh seafood, constant ocean breeze and a completely different energy from everything you have seen so far thiis the city where yo just relax.

In the late afternoon your group heads to Sidi Kaouki, a wild, windswept beach just outside Essaouira where the Atlantic stretches as far as you can see. Sunset here is something else entirely.

Overnight in Essaouira.

Your last morning is for atlantic ocean view and drink in a roof top Walk the ramparts, eat fresh fish at the port, wander the blue streets, sit in a cafe and do absolutely nothing for a while. Essaouira is the kind of place that makes you want to stay longer.

Departure from Essaouira, Marrakech or wherever your flight takes you home from. Your guide and driver will get you there.

Desert days get hot, but nights in the camp get surprisingly cold, so bring layers. A scarf or light headwrap helps with wind and sand, plus sunscreen and comfortable shoes for walking on sand and rock.

Fall and spring are the best times to visit, warm days and comfortable nights. Summer runs hot, but our accommodations and vehicles are air conditioned, so you’re never stuck sweating it out. Winter nights get cold, so pack warm layers, but that’s part of the charm, there’s nothing like wrapping up by the campfire under a clear desert sky.

 

We actually own our own transportation company, so it’s not some random driver you’ve never met. Small groups ride in a Toyota Prado, bigger groups get a Mercedes Vito van or Sprinter minibus, and for groups over 20 we bring in a full-size bus. Everything is clean, comfortable, and driven by drivers we know and trust.

Yes, we can include or exclude activities to suit what you and  your group like.

 

From our experience, several of our travelers who did the desert first and ended the trip on the coast said it was one of the best trips they’ve taken, every day feels like a completely new country. Dunes and starlit camps on one end, surf towns and ocean air on the other, all in one trip.
